  • Do You Like the Movie Jailhouse Rock?

Friday, January 23rd, 6:00pm: My car ran out of gas. Stupid odometer. Shout out to Rob for his gas can; thank you!
Friday, January 23rd, 6:30pm: Stacy, Sarah, Hannah, Justin, Amy, Aubra, Katherine, and I loaded up our cars and drove to Holly Springs Mississippi, which is half-way between Memphis and Tupelo (maybe a little closer to Memphis). Graceland Too is a shrine to Elvis which is a pink mansion and run by a guy named Paul Mcleod. The trip was a blast and I can't wait to bring some of you innocent, unsuspecting souls along for your first visit!

First off, I am not wasting my time on Xanga like I would be on Facebook, if I were still there. I have 2 1/2 hours before my next class and I'm at the vet school with not much else to do. Also, because Xanga encourages us to get to know one another better, and thus grow friendships, I find blogging on here to be worth my time.

Now to the meat of things. I have been trying to come up with a good topic to blog about when something that I think a lot about fell into my lap in an unexpected way: dating. Someone I know from several of my classes ran outside to catch me before I got to my car in order to tell me that his sister is in town, staying with him, and she was looking for a guy to date. He said, "you are single, right?" and then he went on to tell me that she needed a "nice" guy to date and he told her about me and that he would ask. Well, then I gave him the short, in-need-of-revision summation of my outlook on dating: "thanks for thinking of me, but I'm really not interested in dating anyone. I'm kind of hanging low for now."

So now I kind of feel rude that I didn't explain my opinion to him more...but maybe I shouldn't. Maybe that's all he needs to know; I'm single, and not looking.

Nevertheless, I'm going to share with my readers what my opinion on the matter is; dating (and marriage) should be God-focused and glorifying. It should also be between a man and a woman. Ha! How original! But seriously, apparently there is some doubt, so I just want to square that away right out of the gate. Dating should be between a man and a woman because marriage should be between a man and a woman, which leads me to my next and most crucial point; dating should be marriage-oriented. Guys, why play with a girl's emotions if you don't intend for your emotional relationship to go beyond that which it might go if you were just hanging out with your best guy-friend? Girls, why show undeserved respect to a guy who has no focus? In any case, when I date someone, it will be with the intent of finding out if we are compatible for marriage and it will not be a careless, happy-go-lucky, just hanging out because its pleasurable sort of thing. Commit!

Oh, and it snowed yesterday, making that the 5th time I've seen snow in Mississippi in the past year.

  • It is Finally Going to Happen

In a few short days, an American man, partially of African descent, will move
from his private residence into a much larger and infinitely more expensive one
owned not by him but by the taxpayers. A vast lawn, a perimeter fence and many
well trained security specialists will insulate him from the rest of us but the
mere fact that this man will be residing in this house should make us all stop
and count or blessings - because it proves that we live in a nation where
anything is possible. Many believed this day would never come. Most of us hoped
and prayed that it would, but few of us actually believed we would live to see
it. There is little doubt that if this man had moved into this house fifteen
years ago, there would have been a great outcry - possibly even rioting in the
    streets.

Today, we can all be both grateful and proud that no such mayhem will take place
when this man takes up residency in this house.

This man, moving into this house at this time in our nation's history is much
more than a simple change of addresses for him - it is proof of a change in our
attitude as a nation. It is an amends of sorts - the righting of a great wrong.
It is a symbol of our growth, and of our willingness to "judge a man, not by the
color of his skin but by the content of his character".

There can be little doubt now that the vast majority of us truly believe that
this man has earned both his place in history and his new address. His time in
this house will not be easy - it will be fraught with danger and he will face
many challenges. I am sure there will be many times when he asks himself how in
the world he ended up here and like all who have gone before him, the experience
    will age him greatly.

But I for one will not waste an ounce of worry for his sake - because in every
way a man can, he asked for this. His whole life for the past fifteen years
appears to have been inexorably leading this man toward this house. It is highly
probable that in the past, despite all of his actions, racism would have kept
this man out of this house. Today, I thank the Lord above that I am an American
and that I live in a nation where wrongs are righted, where justice matters and
    where truly anything is possible...........
